Join a great team – meet new people – get connected – work together. Know the satisfaction of providing service to others by becoming a volunteer member of a unique community organisation, the Rural Fire Brigade.

Who are we?
We are a diverse group of landholders and members of the Logan Village community who have come together as a Brigade to provide a service to our friends and neighbours. Some of us are full?time farmers securing a livelihood from what we can produce from the land. Some must earn an income elsewhere and can only manage their land at the weekends or whenever. Others of us prefer to work somewhere else and view our land as an asset to be enjoyed at our leisure.

Regardless of our status or gender, we all share a responsibility to manage our land the best way that we can and to become attuned to our environment.

Why do we do it?
Living on the land, we must always be prepared to protect our properties from fire. We need to help each other, since it is highly unlikely that anyone else will be able to, especially if we are some distance from town. Grass fires travel very quickly and it can be "all over Red Rover" before help arrives. Out of necessity, rural people learn very quickly to make do with what they've got and to look after each other in times of need.

What do we do?
As members of a brigade, volunteers undertake a variety of tasks aimed at preventing and fighting fires. Prevention is our main activity, alerting the community to the problems that come in the spring and summer months, by providing advice on home and property fire protection. We also conduct hazard reduction burns during the year, using fire to reduce excess vegetation and minimise the potential for bushfires to get out of control. Our other activity of course is firefighting, but if we can get our prevention message across to landholders so that they take responsibility for protecting their property, then we don't have to do too much of that.

Other things that we choose to do range from assisting urban brigades with their response to incidents, to supporting other community groups and fund raising.

How do we do it?
Fighting fires is obviously a dangerous activity, so no one in the brigade gets to go to a fire without some good basic training. This includes learning about such things as personal protection, fire behaviour, talking on a radio and fighting a fire in company with your mates. Teamwork is an essential part of all of our activities.

Training continues on through your time with the brigade – as much as you want or as little as you need, according to your role and position within the brigade. You can share your own life skills and learn some excellent new ones too!

Where Do We Do It?
Our brigade has a shed on Waterford - Tamborine Rd where our vehicles, radio communications and other equipment are kept. We mainly respond to fires and other emergency incidents in the local area, but if the fire is big enough, then traditional boundaries are forgotten.

How Can You Join Us?
To become a rural fire brigade volunteer, you must be at least 16 years of age and be available for training and operations in the local area. You'll need to be physically fit and ready for a commitment.

You can choose to be involved in:

  • firefighting and fire prevention duties as an active firefighter;
  • radio communications, "feeding the troops" etc through operational support; or
  • engaged in non?firefighting activities within the brigade.

You will be asked to submit an application form to our brigade secretary. Forms are available from the local brigade or from the Rural Fire Service website.

Please remember that this is a volunteer organisation – members receive no reward for their activities other than the acknowledgement and strong support of the local community that they serve.
